How do I get an electrical permit?
Electrical permits are called request for electrical inspections. These forms are now available on line at www.dli.mn.gov/ in a fillable and downloadable format.

Who can file a request for electrical inspection/permit?
A license electrical contractor doing the work, or a homeowner who is doing the work, who which owns and occupies the residence.

Can I file a request for electrical inspection for somebody else to do the electrical work for me?
No. Only the person who files the request for electrical inspection can do the work.

Can I pay for this on line?
Yes! You can now pay online!

What do I do with the form once I have filled it out and printed it?
Sign it, and send payment to Electrical License & Inspection, 443 Lafayette Road North St. Paul, MN 55155-4342.

When do I send the form in?
Minnesota Statutes Section 326.244 requires the form to be filed with the associated inspection fees, and submitted to the department before start of the electrical wiring.

What do I need to do to get a rough-in inspection, and how do I set one up?
All boxes must be in place and all wiring strapped down, and all wiring inside boxes must be spliced and pigtailed and ready for devices to be installed. No devices should be installed before rough-in. If you are unable to do this contact a license electrical contractor for help. Once you have completed this you can set up your inspection on line by going to www.dlhinspections.com, entering the location of the inspection, and then following the easy scheduling process. Please read over the residential check list located on this website to make sure you understand all the code requirements needed before making your inspection request.

What if I cover the electrical work before the Rough-in inspection?
The person responsible for covering the work will have to remove it for the inspection.

What needs to be done to set up my final inspection?
Everything must be completed. All required devices, light fixtures, appliances, and equipment must be installed. No incomplete wiring to be exposed. A final inspection must be completed before occupying space.
